The Children of the Mist held their lands bravely for many years, fighting off various attempts by envious neighbors to oust them. They held splendid lands in Glenorchy in the thirteenth century, and other fine lands in Perthshire and Argyllshire.

In ancient times the seat of the Clan was in the Glenstrae area. With the help of the English monarchy, the Campbells took over much of the MacGregor lands and ended up restricting the Clan to Glenstrae. Throughout the sixteenth, seventeenth, and most of the eighteenth centuries, the MacGregors suffered much persecution, had their named proscribed, and were generally regarded as outlaws.

When the proscription of the MacGregor name was repealed after 171 years, the Clan elected a new Chief, Sir John Murray Macgregor, who moved the seat to Lanrick Castle until 1830, when it was sold. The clan seat was then moved to the Edinchip Estate in Balquhidder which was sold in 1980. The current Clan Chief resides in Newtyle, Angus.
