Hunting MacGregor Tartan Notes

Submitted by Carolynn Black (on the left in the picture)

It is said that the MacGregors of Cardney produced a length of the clan tartan in a deeper "cherry" red, which they liked and thus their name became associated with it. It is unclear when exactly this sett became known alternatively as Hunting MacGregor, but it was almost certainly due to the fact that it was less bright than the normally seen clan sett. This is merely a color variation on the normal Clan Gregor sett and cannot be regarded as a separate tartan. It is probably the result of copying an old or faded sample of the clan tartan.

Sett count

10 Grey, 4 Black, 28 Green, 24 Crimson, 68 Green, and 160 Crimson

As the colors work symmetrically, the pattern repeats in reverse order from the color bands underlined; work backwards and forwards along the thread count given to get a repeat.
