Loch Katrine

The summer dawn's reflected hue,
To purple changed Loch Katrine blue,
Mildly and soft the western breeze,
Just kissed the Lake, just stirr'd the trees.

Sir Walter Scott
The Lady of the Lake

This is Clan Gregor country!
Loch Katrine (Gaelic "Cateran" - meaning a Highland robber) is just under 10 miles long and over 1 mile wide. The Loch lies in the heart of the Trossachs. Loch Katrine's dramatic location was the inspiration for Sir Walter Scott's major work, The Lady of the Lake.

Stronachlachar is a scattering of houses provided for water board workers and a pier for the steamer 'Sir Walter Scott' on Loch Katrine. There are some marvelous views to be had from the pier. Factor's Island, where Rob Roy held the Duke of Montrose's Factor, Graham of Killearn, for ransom, can be viewed just off the pier. You can walk or cycle along the private north Katrine road which leads to the far end of the loch and on to Callander. The steamship was launched in 1899 and still plies the water from the Trossachs Pier.

From this road you can access Glengyle House, for years the home of the MacGregor Chiefs. The clan graveyard can still be found across the road behind the house. Farther down the road is the Portnellan graveyard, now an artificial island created by the water board workers to protect the ancestral burial ground of the MacGregors when the waters of the loch were raised to provide Glasgow's water supply. The clean, pure waters of Loch Katrine have been used as a supply reservoir for the City of Glasgow since 1859.
